Tensions Escalate in Spain After Alleged Assault

(MENAFN) Violent confrontations broke out over the weekend in the southeastern Spanish town of Torre-Pacheco, involving locals, far-right activists, and migrants from North Africa.

The altercations took place on Saturday night and were triggered by a recent assault earlier in the week, in which an elderly man was reportedly attacked by a Moroccan national.

Videos shared across social media platforms depict agitated groups of men in heated arguments on the town's streets, with several individuals seen throwing objects such as bottles and stones.

Riot control forces and units from the Civil Guard were deployed to the area to contain the disorder and prevent the situation from worsening, as captured in multiple video clips.

In one particular video, two opposing groups can be seen flinging a café chair at each other.

Another recording shows a man attempting to communicate from inside a vehicle while being pelted with rocks by a group of young individuals speaking Arabic.

A representative from the local administration informed a news agency that five individuals sustained injuries during the skirmishes, and one person was taken into custody.

Authorities noted that more arrests are anticipated in the coming days in connection with the disturbances and potential incitement of hatred.

Although tensions flared on Saturday, the town returned to a relatively peaceful state by Sunday.

Officials further stated that a formal inquiry into the events is underway and reaffirmed their strong stance against any form of racial aggression.
